Andrej Sekera (born on June 8, 1986) is a Slovak ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL).
He was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the third round (71st overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
Playing Career[]
After playing one season in the Slovak Extraliga for HC Dukla Trenčín, Andrej came to North America.
He played two seasons with the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League. In the 2005–06 season, he won the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the league's most outstanding defenceman.
On July 14, 2006, Andrej signed a three-year contract with the Sabres. He made his professional debut with the Sabres' American Hockey League affiliate, the Rochester Americans in the 2006–07 season.
He also appeared in two National Hockey League games with the Sabres early in the season.
On November 28, 2007, he recorded his first NHL goal against the St. Louis Blues goalie Manny Legace.
In 2009, Andrej was selected to the Slovakian Men's Ice Hockey Olympic team for the February 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
On July 19, 2011, he signed a four-year contract with the Sabres worth 11 million dollars and by doing so, avoided salary arbitration.
On June 30, 2013 during the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, he was traded by the Sabres to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for the 35th overall pick and Jamie McBain.
In 2014, Andrej was selected again to the Slovakian Men's Ice Hockey Olympic team for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
