Jake Muzzin (born Jacob Muzzin on February 21, 1989) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL).
Playing Career[]
Jake played his early minor hockey in the Woodstock Minor Hockey Association before moving on to play AAA in Brantford. When he was 16 years old, he required herniated disc surgery.
He was the 1st pick 11th overall by Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection Draft from the Brantford 99'ers Minor Midgets.
Jake was drafted 141st overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Unsigned by the Penguins from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League, Jake later signed as a free agent to a three-year entry level contract with the Los Angeles Kings on January 4, 2010.
Following the Kings' training camp and pre-season games, he made the Kings opening night roster for the 2010-11 NHL season.
On November 3, 2010, Jake was assigned to the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, however on November 9, 2010, the Kings recalled the defenseman to the NHL for a brief stint before again given a reassignment to the Monarchs in favor of defenseman Alec Martinez on November 23, 2010.
In 2012, Jake was recalled during the playoffs, and was on the roster as a healthy scratch when they won the Stanley Cup.
He did not appear in any games that season. Although Jake didn't qualify to have his name engraved on the cup, he was included in the team picture.
Muzzin scored his first NHL goal in his third game following the 2012 NHL Lockout on January 26, 2013 against Jason LaBarbera of the Phoenix Coyotes.
On July 12, 2013, Jake and the Kings agreed to a new two-year contract.
