Jason Lafreniere (born on December 6, 1966) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player who played 146 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers and the Quebec Nordiques.
Playing Career[]
Jason was a standout in Junior B hockey with the Orillia Travelways in 1982-83. He then moved on to the OHL where he was an offensive threat for three years.
After scoring 95 points in 59 games for the Hamilton Steelhawks in 1984-85, Jason was chosen 36th overall by the Quebec Nordiques at the 1986 NHL Entry Draft.
After that, he returned to junior and scored 132 points playing mostly with the powerful Belleville Bulls. Jason led all playoff scorers with 32 points as the club reached the league finals. Following the season, he was voted to be on the OHL First All-Star team.
During his rookie season in Quebec, Jason scored 28 points in 12 post-season games.
After splitting the 1987-88 season between Quebec and the Fredericton Express of the AHL, he was traded to the New York Rangers along with Normand Rochefort in exchange for Bruce Bell, Jari Gronstrand, Walt Poddubny and the Rangers' 4th-round choice in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.
Jason played in 38 games for the Rangers, but was later sent to the IHL. During the 1990-91 season, he played with the Canadian National Team where he averaged a point in 59 games. After that, he played for the EV Landshut club in Germany during the 1991-92 season.
On July 29, 1992, Jason signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Lightning where he played in 11 games before returning to the IHL where he played with the Atlanta Knights and the Milwaukee Admirals.
Jason would later play hockey in Italy, Austria and Great Britain. He completed his career in Polish ice hockey club, Podhale Nowy Targ.
