Karri Ramo (born July 1, 1986) is a Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender who currently plays for the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL).
He has also played for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Playing Career
Karri was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning as their sixth-round pick, (#191 overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
A product of Peliitat of Heinola, Finland, he made his SM-liiga debut in the 2003–04 season with Pelicans after the team had lost their chance at the playoffs.
In the next season, Karri played 26 games with Pelicans, earning a contract with HPK for 2005-06.
He shared goaltending duties with Miika Wiikman, putting up excellent stats and winning the SM-liiga championship.
He also represented Team Finland at the 2006 Under-20's World Championships as Tuukka Rask's backup.
After HPK's championship, the Lightning signed Karri to a two-way contract. Playing in the American Hockey League with the Norfolk Admirals, he soon made his NHL debut on December 2nd against the Ottawa Senators, replacing Johan Holmqvist.
On December 19th, Karri was once again called up by the Lightning. On December 20th, he won his first NHL start versus the Toronto Maple Leafs, 2–1. He went on to record 7 wins with 11 losses in the 2007–08 season.
With the Lightning signing veteran Olaf Kolzig to be back-up goaltender to Mike Smith, Karri started the 2008–09 season for Norfolk.
He was recalled multiple times by the Lightning and finished the season playing in 24 contests with only 4 wins.
With the prospect of a return to the AHL for the 2009–10 season on June 23, 2009, Karri left the NHL, opting to sign a two-year contract with Avangard Omsk of the KHL.
On August 16, 2010, Karri's NHL rights were traded to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Cedrick Desjardins.
In January 2011 (for the second consecutive year), he was selected to be the starting goaltender for the Eastern Conference in the Kontinental Hockey League All-Star Game collecting more fan votes than anyone else in the league, however, he was unable to participate because of an injury.
On January 12, 2012, Karri (along with Mike Cammalleri and a 5th-round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft) was traded to the Calgary Flames for Rene Bourque, Patrick Holland and a 2nd-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
On July 5th, 2013, Karri was signed to a two year deal worth $5.8 million by the Calgary Flames.
In the 2013 preseason, he won the job to replace Miikka Kiprusoff as Calgary's starter over Joey MacDonald and Reto Berra.
