The Moncton Seals are a professional ice hockey team based within Atlantic Canada. The Seals compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference, and is the second-place southernmost franchise team in the NHL, only being passed within that mark by the Florida Panthers. The team's local broadcasting rights have been held by Bally Sports Canada since March 2024. The Seals are primarily affiliated with the Halifax Dolphins of the American Hockey League, although they also have secondary affiliates within the ECHL and CHA.
History[]
Before 2023[]
The team began play as the Winnipeg Jets, one of the founding franchises in the World Hockey Association (WHA). The Jets were the most successful team in the short-lived WHA, winning the Avco World Trophy, the league's championship trophy, three times and making the finals five out of the WHA's seven seasons. It then became one of the four teams admitted to the NHL as part of a merger when the financially struggling WHA folded in 1979. However, the club was never able to translate its WHA success into the NHL after the merger, and the franchise was relocated into Phoenix after financial issues occurred, becoming the Arizona Coyotes. Despite this move for money reasons, the Coyotes have never been profitable in Arizona, with mounting losses eventually compelling the franchise to file for bankruptcy after the 2008–09 season, with the team being taken over by the league just before the next season began. After twelve more years of coliseum rejections and financial losses, the Coyotes was immediately sold onto Cody Taylor (under Moncton Sports & Entertainment) during April 2023, who immediately relocated the franchise into Moncton.
