Wild Wing is the official mascot of the Anaheim Ducks. The name was chosen through a fan contest where a participant suggested it. Wild Wing is a unique mascot in the National Hockey League's history as he is the first to descend from the rafters of the arena. He is an anthropomorphic duck and was featured in the animated series Mighty Ducks, where he was given the last name of Flashblade and a younger brother named Nosedive. In the show, Wild Wing was the leader of the Mighty Ducks team, who were also superheroes. The team's previous leader, Canard, was lost in Dimensional Limbo while chasing the Saurians, a group of draconic beings who had devastated their home planet, Puckworld. Wild Wing inherited the legendary "Mask of DuCaine" from Canard. During the team's home opener against the Calgary Flames on October 18, 1995, Wild Wing made national news after catching fire while attempting to jump over a wall of flames. His skates caught on a trampoline, causing the failed fire jump. However, this incident made him the most recognized mascot in professional sports, and he returned the next game on crutches and successfully repeated the fire jump, this time with a harness hanging from the rafters. Disney Sports, the owners of the Anaheim Ducks, introduced a new version of Wild Wing in 1996, which was disliked by the fans due to its meaner appearance. This version of Wild Wing lasted only two home games. Wild Wing wears the jersey number #93, which refers to the Ducks' founding year of 1993. In Mighty Ducks, Wild Wing wears the number #00.[1]
